i-Miev Electric Car

Mitsubishi's i MiEV concept is the basis for a small EV that the automaker plans to sell in the United States.

Mitsubishi Motor Corp. will introduce a small electric car to sell at its U.S. dealerships.

The model, a Japan-built ultra-compact with a 330-volt lithium-ion battery, is currently being road-tested in Oregon. Mitsubishi plans to begin marketing the car in Japan in July, and to introduce the car in Europe in 2010.

The U.S. market launch is tentatively scheduled to occur after Europe's launch.

Mitsubishi has been showing the model to audiences around the world in recent weeks, dubbed the i MiEV. A left-hand-drive version of the i MiEV was shown at the New York auto show.

A pair of in-wheel motors drive the front two wheels of the eco-friendly Mitsubishi i MIEV Sport electric minicar, while another third motor drives the rear wheels. The i MIEV Sport has a range of 200 kilometers (120 miles), and is powered by lithium ion batteries, with extra juice provided by auxiliary solar cells

mounted on the roof, a generating fan mounted in the front grille, and a regenerative braking system that recovers energy as the car slows down. Further efficiency is achieved with power-saving LEDs and heat-absorbing window glass, and the interior features lots of bioplastic components.

The i MiEV SPORT AIR explores the future possibilities for zero-emission vehicles, placing a greater bias on exhilarating driving pleasure. The concept model exemplifies the balance between environmental and dynamic performance implied in the tagline Drive@earth, and highlights the benefits of the Mitsubishi electric vehicle drivetrain:

Stable driving and handling and a low center of gravity, due to the in-floor lithium-ion battery

Together, these features along with the car's "clear cutaway" top allow the driver to enjoy the exhilaration of fresh-air motoring while also highlighting its eco-friendly qualities.
