The 8-wheeled Electric Eliica - The makers of the Eliica (which stands for Electric Lithium-Ion Car) aim to exceed 250 mph, with a range of 200 miles between charges. Each of 8 wheels house an 80 hp electric motor. The project’s goal is to test the capabilities of electric vehicles and exceed 250mph, the current record for a street-legal gas powered vehicle.
The i MiEV is built to Japanese K-car regulations, which promote smaller, more efficient cars in return for tax and insurance perks. That limits its width to 4ft 10in and it’s about 10in narrower than a Ford Fiesta. This, coupled with its loftiness, exaggerates its cartoon-like styling - perfect for those who want to scream their eco-credentials. It is the automotive equivalent of a Che Guevara T-shirt. The electric i MiEV was developed alongside its gas-powered sibling i minicar and has an unusual “rear-midship” power-plant, where the electric motor is under the rear seat, the battery pack beneath the floor, in place of the fuel tank.
Electric cars are in the news all the time. There are several reasons for the continuing interest in these vehicles:
Electric cars create less pollution than gasoline-powered cars, so they are an environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles (especially in cities).
Most news story about hybrid cars usually talks about electric cars as well.
There are a lot of differences between gasoline and electric cars:
The gasoline engine is replaced by an electric motor.
The electric motor gets its power from a controller.
The controller gets its power from an array of rechargeable batteries.
A gasoline engine, with its fuel lines, exhaust pipes, coolant hoses and intake manifold, tends to look like a plumbing project. An electric car is definitely a wiring project.
